70-Year-Old Barista Charms In Istanbul Cafe – CoffeeTalk
Hava Çal, a 70-year-old Turkish woman, has gained popularity on social media for her role as a barista in her daughter’s coffee shop in Fatih, Istanbul. She began working as a support system for her daughter and passing time, but quickly became a hit with young customers. Çal, who has lived in Austria for 36 years, returned to Turkey after her children settled in Istanbul. After her daughter opened a shop in Süleymaniye 16 years ago, she took an interest in coffee-making and has been helping out as a barista for the past decade.
Çal explained that she learned the craft while watching her daughter and others, and she tried making coffee herself and enjoyed it. A young lady once ordered an Americano from her, and when she liked it, she posted about her on social media, which started her receiving attention. Her primary role is to help her daughter when the cafe gets busy, as they are always near Istanbul University and call her “Barista Auntie.”
One of the cafe visitors, Melek Tekirdağ, expressed admiration for Çal, noting her friendly nature and fluency in German. Another customer, Rabia Tekirdağ, shared her excitement about meeting Çal in person, stating that she had seen her on social media before and was surprised to see her in person. The coffee she had tried was great, especially the one made by Aunt Hava.
Hava Çal’s journey into the coffee-making craft has become a popular and inspiring experience for young customers in Istanbul.
