#1 Worst Coffee Habit for Your Blood Sugar
If you are watching your blood sugar levels, drinking coffee before breakfast is the worst habit you can have. In a study conducted in 2020, British researchers discovered that consuming two cups of coffee before breakfast increased blood sugar levels by up to 50 percent.
There are two primary ways that drinking caffeinated coffee before breakfast can increase blood sugar levels.
First, caffeine inhibits a protein called adenosine. Adenosine tells the body how much insulin to produce and helps cells respond effectively to insulin. Coffee consumption before meals can reduce insulin secretion and cell sensitivity to insulin, resulting in higher blood sugar levels.
The ability of caffeine to increase stress hormones, such as cortisol and epinephrine, in the body is a second way in which coffee can increase blood sugar levels. These hormones increase blood sugar so that you have readily available energy to combat the stress you are experiencing. As insulin production decreases, blood sugar levels rise.
Even though drinking coffee before a meal is one of the worst things you can do for your blood sugar, you do not have to give up coffee altogether.
The effect of coffee on blood sugar can be mitigated by delaying its consumption until after a well-balanced breakfast. If you need something to get you going in the morning, try a cup of tea, half-caf coffee, or simply limit your coffee intake to 6 ounces. The less you consume before breakfast, the less effect it will have on your blood sugar.
