Frgmnt Coffee Features a World of Roasters in the Twin Cities
A multiroaster coffee outfit called Frgmnt Coffee (styled FRGMNT by the company) has added a second location in the Twin Cities, replicating a model in which a relatively small footprint opens to a spacious public area and a whole world of coffees.
In a 450-square-foot space in the corner of the One Southwest Crossing building in the Minneapolis suburb of Eden Prairie, the new Frgmnt boasts seating for over 100 people through seamless connection to the lobby.
The concept mirrors the original 600-square-foot Frgmnt coffee bar opened by co-owners Ben Banse and Sarah Roehl in the lobby of the mixed-use office building The Nordic in Minneapolis’s North Loop neighborhood in 2019.
“Our space feels much larger,” Frgmnt Co-Owner Ben Banse told Daily Coffee News. “From the colors and wood tones, both bars have complimentary elements to the rest of the lobby.”
For both locations, Frgmnt worked with Minneapolis-based design firm Studio BV, resulting in details such as finely black-and-white tile bar front.
Atop both bars are La Marzocco espresso machines paired with Nuova Simonelli Mythos grinders and Puqpress tampers, plus Mahlkönig EK43 grinders paired with Fetco batch brewing systems for drip offerings.
The roasted coffees moving through those machines are sourced from domestic and international roasters alike. Options from the United States have come from Portland, Oregon-based Heart Coffee Roasters; Portland, Maine-based Tandem Coffee Roasters; and numerous others.
Beans shipped from overseas have come from Australia’s Ona Coffee, UK-based Square Mile Coffee, Sweden’s Koppi Coffee and others. Customers can also purchase retail bags of coffees by international roasters through the Frgmnt website and subscription program.
“We are trying to make it easier and cheaper to get some great beans without having to pay for shipping from across the world,” said Banse. “We make a great effort to source roasters that aren’t represented elsewhere in our city. We feel our program is very unique to our city and we really continue to try to highlight the offerings we have and the opportunity to have it in our shop and nowhere else.”
The company has recently completed building a mobile coffee trike, and it is currently outfitting a mobile cart for pop-ups and catering. Moving forward, Frgmnt intends to grow piece by piece.
“Over the past year, we have been approached by a lot of projects,” said Banse. “We do a great job filling our spaces with people and a good energy, and these spaces and projects want us to replicate that. We don’t have a hard number [of shops] we hope to run; we just want to grow organically, bring value to the neighborhoods we end up in, while at the same time keep the culture of the brand we started just two years ago.”
The new Frgmnt Coffee is located at 11095 Viking Drive in Eden Prairie. Tell DCN’s editors about your new coffee shop or roastery.
