Uganda says coffee exports down 14 per cent yr/yr due to drought

The state-run sector regulator reported that Uganda’s coffee exports decreased last month due to the effects of a drought affecting many growing regions across the country.

According to a report by Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA), the east African nation exported 503,695 60-kg bags of coffee beans in September, a decrease of 14% compared to the same month a year earlier.

“The decrease in exports was primarily attributable to this year’s lower yields, which were caused by drought in most regions,” UCDA stated, adding that the dry conditions had shortened the harvest season in central and eastern Uganda.

Uganda is Africa’s largest exporter of coffee, followed by Ethiopia, and a significant source of foreign exchange earnings.

September is the final month of the crop year, which begins in October of the previous year.
