Uganda coffee exports plunge 29% in August on impact of drought

The coffee industry regulator reported that Uganda’s coffee exports dropped 28.5% year-over-year in August due to a drought that damaged crops in parts of the country and reduced yields.

Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) said in a report seen by Reuters on Wednesday that the country exported 501,054 60-kg bags of coffee during the month of August, compared to 700,990 bags during the same month last year.

The decrease in exports was primarily attributable to lower yields this year, which were caused by drought in the majority of regions, according to UCDA.

The drought shortened the main harvest season in the country’s central and eastern regions, which reduced yields, according to the regulator.
