Coffee leaf rust is posing a threat to the coffee industry in Hawaii, with the fungus first found in 2020. Farmers are working with the University of Hawaii to manage the issue through extreme pruning and other measures. Greenwell Farms, one of Hawaii’s oldest family-run operations, has faced drought and pests since 1850. Despite the challenges, the farm continues to use traditional methods and is constantly seeking new varieties, such as the fruity mamo variety.
