Buganda Kingdom Partners With Danish Government For Climate-Smart Coffee – CoffeeTalk
The Buganda Kingdom and the Danish government have launched a solar-powered irrigation project to ensure sustainable coffee and other crop cultivation in Uganda. The project was launched at a farm run by the Child Welfare and Adoption Society in Ssango, Mawokota County, Mpigi District. The Danish Ambassador to Uganda, Ms Signe Winding Alberg, emphasized the importance of such partnerships in addressing climate adaptation challenges. The government is committing 10 million Danish Krone (about Shs5 billion) with additional contributions from commercial partners to ensure long-term sustainability in Uganda’s agricultural sector. The project aims to install 1,386 irrigation systems across the country, benefiting about 100,000 farmers. The host farmer, Rev Sr Sarah Namaala, expressed gratitude for the installation and praised the solar-powered irrigation system as a game-changer. The 3-year project aims to create a more food-secure future for Uganda and is part of the project “Enhancing Irrigation to Improve Climate Adaptation and Sustain Smallholder Production Systems in Uganda,” funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark under the Danida Green Business Partnerships Programme. The initiative is spearheaded by a consortium of partners, including the Eastern Africa Grain Council (EAGC), Access2Innovation, Grundfos, and Akvo International.
