The extreme heat has led to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) putting fifteen states and the capital, Brasilia, under alert. The heat has also affected Sao Paulo residents, with temperatures reaching an average of 37.3 degrees Celsius. The extreme heat has led to record electric power consumption and has exacerbated the country’s ongoing El Nino phenomenon, which has caused droughts in the Amazon and intense rains.
