CoE celebrates Guatemala’s best coffee producers
Cup of Excellence (CoE) and the National Coffee Association (Anacafé) has announced 30 winning lots and five National Winner coffees in the 19th edition of the Guatemalan competition.
The CoE winning coffees, representing nine regions in Guatemala, reflect five varieties, with two-thirds Geisha, three processes, and three Presidential Award winners. The three coffees that won the Comandante ‘Top Farm’ trophy grinder are all washed Geishas.
Producer Jose Roberto Monterroso Pineda from finca El Morito in Jalapa won first-place for his coffee, scoring 91.75 points.
“It took us 21 years to obtain the first place,” says Pineda, referencing the first Guatemala CoE in 2001.
Produced by the Aguirre family from El Injerto I in Huehuetenango, the second-place winning coffee scored 91.33 points. The Aguirre family won the most CoE awards in the competition’s history.
Producer Fredy Milton Morales Merida of Rosa Farm in Huehuetenango won third place, scoring 90.13 points.
The coffees were evaluated by 14 national cuppers, 14 international cuppers, and five observers, all of the highest level, led by Erwin Mierisch.
“In Guatemala, we produce specialty coffees with unique characteristics and the Cup of Excellence is a window to publicise the quality of Guatemalan coffees and encourage producers by linking them with international buyers,” says Juan Luis Barrios, President of Anacafé.
Every year, Anacafé invites all producers to participate in this process. This year, the process began with the reception of 158 coffee samples. In the pre-selection stage, 92 coffees were classified that met all the requirements established by ACE and participated in the National Competition. Of these, 40 met the requirements and qualified for the International Competition.
The 30 winning lots of coffee will be auctioned online on Tuesday, 19 July 2022. The Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) is offering sample sets of the winning coffees to purchase before the auctions. Interested parties must join ACE as a member to register for samples and auctions.
