Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Capitol Hill, Seattle was defaced after its closure alongside a nationwide reduction in store numbers and layoffs affecting approximately 900 non-retail employees. The incident, captured in a photo on Reddit, showed the word “cowardly” spray-painted across the establishment’s boarded windows. This closure is part of Starbucks’ strategy to focus its resources on outlets that can meet customer expectations and achieve financial performance. The Capitol Hill Roastery, alongside others recently announced for closure, reflects a significant reduction in Starbucks’ North American store count, now expected to be 18,300, a decrease of 124 stores from the previous fiscal year.

The Roastery, which opened in December 2014, was known for its exclusive coffees, signature cocktails, enhanced food menu, and immersive coffee experiences, making it one of the few locations in the world, including cities such as Chicago and Tokyo, to host a Starbucks Reserve Roastery. Starbucks emphasized the significance of its coffeehouses as community centers, noting that store closures, while sometimes necessary due to performance or lease issues, are challenging decisions for both partners and customers. The company’s CEO, Brian Niccol, who took the helm about a year ago, aims to revitalize the brand, drawing from his successful turnaround experience at Chipotle, where he significantly boosted revenues and stock performance. This initiative marks a pivotal moment in Starbucks’ operational strategy amidst increasing competition and changing consumer behaviors.
