A report by the Statista Research Department has revealed an upward trend in the number of Australian cafés and restaurants, with an approximately 30 per cent increase in venues from 2017 to 2023.

At the end of the 2023 financial year, 54,000 cafés and restaurants were reported to be in operation, up from approximately 41,570 in 2017.

The number of businesses peaked in 2022 at 54,400. However, this was followed by slight negative growth in 2023, with the number of venues reported at 54,285.

In addition to an upward trend of the number of businesses in recent years, the annual revenue of these venues reached a new peak in 2023 at $63.99 billion, up from $58.15 billion in 2022.

The report suggests the states of New South Wales and Victoria are home to the majority of Australia’s food service establishments at 19,206 and 16,869 in 2023, respectively, owing to their higher population densities.

International café chains such as McCafé and Jack’s Café alongside domestic coffee franchise The Coffee Club had the highest number of locations across popular coffee franchises in Australia in 2023 at 1044, 467, and 229, respectively.

Additionally, the annual domestic consumption of coffee is reported at above two million 60-kilogram bags for the past four years.
