New training cafe opens in aged care facility

At the Star of the Sea Aged Care Residence in Torquay, a new cafe employing locals with disabilities is opening.

Over the next twelve months, more than ten trainees will work at Star Cafe with the assistance of hospitality and disability support workers.

The coordinator of the cafe, Cathy Rundle, stated that the Surf Coast had a significant need for a facility of this nature.

Ms. Rundle stated that the objective was to assist these trainees in entering the workforce.

“If our clients can be trained to develop those skills to the point where they can work as kitchen hands or baristas, I believe it will provide our businesses with skilled labor,” she said.

“We will spend time with participants, leading to their skill development.”

I believe they will be an asset to future employers.

Ms. Rundle stated that there were also intergenerational benefits due to the location of the cafe in an elderly care facility.

It had also been well received by center visitors.

The cafe will open around December 3, which is International Day of People with Disabilities.
