The Green Hydrogen Valley Project in Laos is set to launch a hydrogen-powered coffee roasting plant in Champasak Province by mid-2026. The initiative, led by Tokyo-based TSB Greenex and supported by eight other companies, will use hydrogen derived from Laos’ abundant hydropower resources. The 6 billion-yen ($41 million) project, which received partial funding from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, will roast locally grown Arabica coffee beans at 200 degrees Celsius using clean hydrogen, producing 3,000 tonnes of coffee annually. This will be 10% to 20% cheaper than regular coffee, benefiting Laos, a major coffee producer, and boosting economic development.
