How to make the best-ever coffee when you’re in the office

Unless you work for a tech company or an excessively well-funded start-up, the odds are that your office coffee offering consists of a calcified kettle and a large container of Nescafe Gold.

First up is a simple, entry-level device that is nearly impossible to mess up – even for those just beginning to consider alternative coffee preparation methods.

The cafetière, also known as the French Press, was invented and patented in Italy by designer Attilio Calimani in the late 1920s. It is a method of brewing known as immersion. As the term suggests, you submerge the coffee grounds in water and allow the bean-like flavor to infuse the water over time.

This is likely the quickest and easiest way to immediately improve your beverage game. For a one-cup cafetière, procure coarsely-ground coffee from any reputable supermarket or roaster, fill the chamber with 16 grams of coffee, or roughly three level tablespoons, and fill to the top with water. Four minutes later, stir, replace the lid, and plunge.

The additional stir may seem unnecessary, but it forces the grounds to settle to the bottom of the container, making them less likely to enter your cup when you plunge.

And voila, you now have a tastier and more flavorful cup at work.
