Supermarkets have criticized JDE Peet’s plans to increase coffee prices by 15 to 25%, breaking the €10 barrier for a 500 gramme pack. At the beginning of this year, supermarkets Albert Heijn, Jumbo, and Plus refused to accept a 20% hike and banned DE coffee from their shelves. The coffee maker claims failed harvests in Brazil and Vietnam are boosting costs, resulting in a 500 gramme packet of Dutch staple Aroma Rood ground coffee now costing €10.69. Picnic director Michiel Ruiter believes coffee is becoming a very expensive product. Plus director Aart van Haren said negotiations will continue to be “strained” and failed harvests do not justify the price hike. JDE Peet acknowledges that prices have gone up due to increased costs and has only factored in what was inevitable.
