Coffee can make your hair fall out, a doctor explains
Hair loss can be distressing and have a negative effect on one’s self-esteem.
However, one physician has revealed how your morning routine may be exacerbating the problem.
The majority of people will reach for a cup of coffee or tea first thing in the morning, and while this may provide an energy boost, it may be damaging to your hair.
The ingredients in black tea and coffee can deplete your iron levels, resulting in hair loss.
Dr. Sara Kayat explained that while most people lose between 100 and 150 strands of hair per day, some people lose more due to stress.
Generally, hair loss will cease once your stress levels subside, but this is easier said than done.
With that in mind, Dr. Kayat, who is collaborating with Viviscal, recommends avoiding caffeine, which may be contributing to hair loss.
“Did you know that the tannins in black tea can inhibit iron absorption, increasing the risk of iron deficiency and resulting in hair loss?” she explained.
“If you are a black tea drinker, try to limit your consumption or, even better, switch to green tea.”
Coffee has a tannin content of approximately 4.6 percent, while tea has a tannin content of approximately 11.2 percent. Tannins are protein-binding molecules found in tree wood and bark, unripe fruits, and plant leaves.
Dr. Kayat stated that not only people with an iron deficiency can suffer from hair damage, but also those with lactose intolerances.
While the majority of people with lactose intolerance do not consume pints of milk, Dr. Kayat advised that those who do should avoid products that may cause a flare-up to avoid hair damage and loss.
