Climate Change Challenges Prompt Starbucks To Promote Sustainable Farming Practices – CoffeeTalk
Coffee consumption is on the rise globally, with 2.2 billion cups consumed daily. However, climate change and unsustainable farming practices pose a significant threat to coffee farmers. Starbucks Vice President of Global Coffee Agronomy, R&D, and Sustainability, Roberto Alonso Vega Alfaro, emphasizes the need for farmers to adopt modern sustainable practices to combat climate change. Starbucks has 10 farmer support centers in various countries, including Indonesia, where they teach farmers how to mitigate soil degradation and water scarcity.
For soil degradation, composting coffee waste is used, with only 20% of the fruit being wasted. The remaining 80 percent is valuable for soil improvement and can replace fertilizer. Starbucks also provides machines that can reduce water consumption by up to 50%. Demonstrations of these machines are placed in demonstration plots to demonstrate their benefits.
However, teaching farmers to adopt sustainable practices is challenging, as changing habits passed down for generations is the biggest challenge. Demonstrations are crucial, as they encourage farmers to change behaviors and practice sustainable farming. By demonstrating successful practices, farmers are more likely to adopt sustainable farming practices.
